Abandoned New Jersey child reunited with fatherA 4-year-old boy from Somerdale, New Jersey was reunited with his father and brother after his mother was accused of leaving him with a stranger who abandoned him.
Justin Angel Roman returned to his family's basement home in the White Horse Manor Apartments in Somerdale, New Jersey on Friday after his father Luis won custody of the child in Family Court from the state Division of Youth and Family Services.
"I've got my whole family back, like I want, for Christmas," Luis Roman said Friday night on Channel 29. "I'm happy."
Sandra A. Roman, 29, a paroled drug offender accused of leaving her son in the hands of a stranger in Camden, is pregnant and battling drug addiction, neighbors say.
She was smoking crack and looking for more early Thursday morning when she left Justin with a man who led her to a drug market, Camden County, New Jersey Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi said Friday.
"For her to do what she did is just unforgivable," said Linda Iacono, who lives next door to the Romans.
The mother of two is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and was being held on $50,000 bail in the Camden County, New Jersey Jail. No court dates have been set for Roman, Sarubbi said, but a condition of her bail is that she have no contact with her son.
Roman was released from Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, New Jersey in February 2001 after serving three months on drug charges.
Luis Roman did not know the whereabouts of his wife and son until he saw Justin's picture on television Thursday night and called the Somerdale, New Jersey police department.
"It's clearly just horrendous," Sarubbi said at a news conference Friday. "We can't imagine what would bring a mother to the point where she would leave her child and go look for drugs."
Sarubbi said Roman smoked crack in the presence of her son in an open-air drug area and lingered there while the stranger took the boy to the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden, New Jersey.
The stranger eventually left the ailing child, strapped in his stroller, New Jersey authorities said.
Based on information from witnesses, investigators found and arrested Roman at 8:45 p.m Thursday near Boyd Street and Baird Boulevard, a "well-known drug and prostitution center," Sarubbi said.
He gave the following account of the incident:
About 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sandra Roman took her son to Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Stratford by ambulance because he had a high fever. After the boy was treated, Roman took the PATCO Hi-Speedline from the Lindenwold station to the transportation center in Camden, New Jersey.
Once there, Roman asked a stranger to help her find some crack cocaine. The three left the station together. The man, whom New Jersey authorities would not identify, has not been arrested.
A Pemberton, New Jersey Borough woman found the boy at 4 a.m. on the New Jersey Transit side of the center. The woman gave the boy a doughnut and some milk. After two hours, she turned him over to the state's Division of Youth and Family Services in Camden, New Jersey.
Justin was treated Friday at Cooper University Hospital, where he was admitted with an ear infection and a 104 degree fever, Sarubbi said.
Neighbor Jessica Kopakowski said Sandra Roman's drug addiction took a toll on Luis, and their two sons, Justin and Nelson.
"I know she had drug problems, but she said she wasn't using," said Kopakowski, 22. "I know she had disappeared once or twice before. It was really hard on Luis."
No one answered the door at the Romans' apartment Friday afternoon. On the door hung a Christmas wreath and a card addressed to Sandy, Luis, and the boys.
